Small Acts of Friendship Coordinator appointed

Elderly care is a vital and growing part of hospital care but older patients can find being in hospital a confusing and disorientating experience.

Small Acts of Friendship is a unique charitable programme supporting elderly patients at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Created by the Elderly Care Team and funded by Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals, Small Acts has appointed Paola O’Sullivan as Project Co-ordinator.  Her role is to develop a more sympathetic environment that provides entertainment, activities and a little ‘pampering’ for patients who are able and wish to participate.    Paola explained ‘This Initiative will help to deliver a more holistic, patient centred and individualised care to our elderly patients. With the introduction of meaningful activities we hope to increase the patient’s social interaction, mobility and sensory stimulus so they feel less institutionalised when in hospital and better able to rejoin their community when they leave’.

Paola joins BSUH following a career as a chartered management accountant and a more recent transition to Occupational Therapy.  She will manage the project budget as well as sourcing and co-ordinating activities and entertainment for patients.  Initially funded for one year by Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals, Small Acts will be evaluated by a team from Brighton & Sussex Medical School and Paola has already begun pre-evaluation to assess patient priorities.  Based in Jowers Ward, Paola can be contacted on paola.o'sullivan@bsuh.nhs.uk
